Psycho Chicken

The Rogue Rooster

His name is D'Artagnan and he is what country folk call a man fighter. That, for those who don't know, is a rooster that will attack people. He will attack people, with extreme prejudice. That is why he must live in his own rooster tractor where he cannot harm anyone. I don't know what makes a rooster turn this way, but it is most unfortunate.

His is a truly beautiful bird.

Life

Everyone I know is overwhelmed with life these days. How do we fix it? There is nowhere left to run, there is nowhere left to turn. Every decision requires copious hours of research and choices are many times very limited. We are all so tired of just trying to live.

Hug a dog. Kiss a chicken. Smile at a stranger and hold the door for someone. It helps.

Good Morning to you too!

I went out to feed my young guinea birds this morning and heard coyotes just out of sight. They scare the bejeebers out of a lot of people but I love to listen to their calls. I proceeded into the guinea house and discovered a medium sized black snake curled under an old plastic milk crate in the house. Considering the attitude of guineas toward snakes, I felt it necessary to move said mouse eater. He wasn't happy, but did let me carry him out and send him under the house where all would be OK.

I hadn't expected so much activity on the farm this morning, but if one thing can be said for keeping critters, you never know what you'll come across one minute to the next.

I have been letting my young chickens out each evening and they are a bunch of hoodlums. They really keep me laughing.

Feed Prices

The price of chicken feed, goat feed, dog food and people food is rising at an unmanageable rate. You probably already know about the people food. Every effort to become more self sufficient is thwarted by the expense and the labor. I am no longer able to do heavy labor so I do what I can and I thought growing my own eggs would be a smart move. I free range my flock which helps considerably, but keeping chickens is still getting so expensive is may become prohibitive, which is really a shame considering what pleasant people chickens can be.

I much prefer the company of my critters in most cases. People give me hives.
