Maybe I Don't Need a Vacation

Have you ever noticed how much trouble it is to take a vacation? By the time you get there you're worn out from all the prep, at least I am, and when you get back it takes forever to catch up. I keep watching as my friends go places and do things. They bring back great memories, and tons of work.

I once spent seven weeks on vacation. I had a grand time and it was months before my head was fully back home. I've been thinking a lot about home and what is wrong with it. If I lock the gate and don't answer the phone unless its someone I want to talk to, it's pretty much like a vacation. There is anticipation each morning, surprises all day, time for a nap and plenty of time to watch the clouds in the sky. There is no traffic, no rudeness, no uncertainty, and no extra work to do when I get home. The only thing I don't have are the great stories people from all over the country have told me. That is a significant loss but hardly unbearable. If I pay attention, I get great stories everyday.

There is the other problem of no change of scenery. On the other hand, the scenery is beautiful here. Maybe I should stop saying I need a vacation. Maybe everyday is a vacation, if I use the right approach. Maybe the idea of a vacation is all a state of mind.
